Meet John Stringer, our recently-appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO). John was brought on board to strengthen our current executive and management team at a critical period for FOS and FOS staff.
What did you do before joining FOS?
I’m an accountant by trade. I spent the first 13 years of my career in the insurance broking arena, before moving to a large insurance firm. I started out working there as an accountant but then moved into operations, working on claims strategy and service delivery. I spent 20 years there, and completed a law degree during that time. Most recently I was Chief Executive Officer for another insurance company.
What is your role at FOS?
As COO, my role is to oversee the ongoing operations of FOS in the short term, while helping us transition to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) in the medium to longer term.
What is the most challenging part of your role?
Transitioning to AFCA is a big change to complete in a relatively short period of time, and logistically it’s complicated. Internally there will be changes to our processes, systems, technology and governance, which will affect AFCA members as well. So in addition to consulting about AFCA rules (previously known as the Terms of Reference) and an interim funding model, we will need to work closely with all our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition come November 1.
What is the most rewarding part of your role?
Change is often difficult, but I think the rewards are worth it. It’s an exciting time to be working at FOS and in this industry.
